Southern Compass Outfitters

Tennessee Street | Tallahassee, Florida

The second Tallahassee location for Southern Compass Outfitters, this project was specifically selected for its proximity to Florida State University. The existing building had previous stints as a ‘50s era hardware store and later expanded to include various businesses prior to renovation. The existing building shell was maintained while the interior was gutted.

The Tennessee Street façade improvements included new brick veneer with a white wash finish, complemented with natural Ipe wood siding set on a diagonal to resemble a coastal boardwalk. The existing concrete fin was maintained and allows the opportunity for shading of the expansive glass below. The western corner of the building, most visible to vehicular traffic, provided the opportunity for continuation of the wood siding, as well as placement of an oversized logo ‘compass’ to provide identity of the brand. The interior finishes include a simple elegance focused around reclaimed wood features, new lighting and exposed structure. Environmental improvements include new HVAC systems, as well as insulated glazing along the front façade.
