“ALW brought many, many cutting-edge ideas for infrastructure, architectural features, treatment of the façade, furniture, support for unusual technologies in our FabLab, all the way down to colors, coverings and wall graphics. The result is an amazing facility that positively impacts our campus culture. Students express a deep appreciation for the space, and the typical reaction of visitors during their initial visit is jaw-dropping.”

The Innovation Hub, located at Florida State University, was created to engage students across disciplines and provide a flexible environment for creativity, collaboration, and hands-on learning. ALW provided programming, design, and construction administration services for the facility, transforming a former library into an adaptable academic resource.

The design emphasizes open, reconfigurable spaces that can shift between study, presentation, fabrication, and display, offering users the ability to shape the environment to their needs. While large collaboration zones anchor the facility, smaller enclosed offices, meeting spaces, and study rooms provide opportunities for focused work and advising. At the center of the Hub is the open collaboration space, featuring flexible seating, a help desk, fabrication areas, and a “porch” lounge that acts as the social heart of the facility.

The Innovation Hub demonstrates how careful programming and thoughtful renovation can create a multi-use facility that supports academic success, promotes collaboration, and adapts easily to new technologies and program demands.
